The Mercedes-Benz 5G-Tronic automatic transmission, also known as a It is fitted to a number of vehicles within the Mercedes-Benz range, as well as some Jeep, Jaguar, and Ssangyong models.

The valve that controls the torque converter lockup in the The valve itself can be reamed and replaced, fixing the problem.
In some cases, a replacement torque converter may also need to be fitted. The biggest problem faced by owners of a vehicle running a This usually occurs when the transmission has run somewhere in the region of 80, miles since new or since the last time it was overhauledand will require a full overhaul to repair.
On vehicles where the transmission cooler is built into the standard engine radiator, it is quite common for the pipes to corrode, allowing engine coolant to contaminate the transmission fluid. The ingredients of the engine coolant break down essential materials inside the transmission, exponentially accelerating wear of the clutches and causing the transmission to fail.

Vehicles Running the However much like the previous seven speed conductor plate, the 7G Tronic Plus still comes with its fair share of problems. Commonly when the 7G Tronic Plus conductor plate fails it will cause gears to stick before instigating a harsh gear adjustment causing rough and jerky gear change.
Failure of the 7G Tronic Plus conductor plate will also completely prevent selection of any gear, leaving the vehicle undriveable. When looking at diagnosing the vehicle for these issues be sure to scan and read fault codes from the transmission, if faulty the 7G Tronic Plus conductor plate will log fault codes for internal speed sensor issues.
All of these faults usually begin intermittently but will always worsen into a more permanent state if left unresolved. Rather than an expensive replacement from manufacturer, which will need SCN Software Calibration Numbering and CVN Calibration Verification Number coding at an extra expense, we offer test and rebuild of your original conductor plate within working days.
By rebuilding your original you will not need any form of coding or programming when you receive it back. During rebuild only the highest rated components are used by our highly skilled technicians. All coding is retained during test and rebuild — meaning that there is no need for expensive programming when you receive the unit back from us.

Dashboard Instrument Cluster. Comments on "Mercedes seven speed 7G Tronic Plus problems causing no gear selection". I think mine as gone I have a scanner coming this week I will check it I only live down the the road from you in Ripley could I bring the conductor plate in to you myself or would you rather I go through the postal procedure. Thanks Karl. Hi Karl, you are more than welcome to bring us your part. These guys have helped me a few times now on different cars.
Can anyone please describe the symptoms of the fault? Many thanks. The main complaint was hard changes fro 1 and 2 gears, this involves someone with STAR who knows the boxes to re adapt the torque converter lock up. I know that Colin at MBS is very good at this and I have been in two cars that he has set up and the changes were seamless and you never felt a thing. It's to fix the harsh two into one shift.
It can help but IMHO it's such a complex box missing parts like sprag clutches over the 5g box to smooth down changes. I never liked a single car I've driven with this box. You should study the workings Steve of the 7g box, there is more than one way to skin a cat. The fact that adaption done correctly fixes most of these faults, and the fact that most of us have perfect changes shows that it is not needed, things do move forward with new ways of doing things.
This subject becomes boring Steve and you have no right at all to insist that my 7g is anything other than a delightful perfect box, the same as many others have told you. Exjag - If you are happy with the box at the moment, I'd leave well alone. I had a software update on my 7G done in March last year to fix a harsh shift from 2nd - 1st. This happened only when the box was cold, it was fine when warm. Apart from that, I thought the 7G box was excellent with very smooth predictable shifts and an uncanny knack of being in the right gear nearly all the time.
Since the software upodate, the professional chauffeur has been replaced by a learner driver and the car has never been right since. It has been back to 2 main dealers and one indy to reset the adaptions in an attempt to restore the previously excellent performance - with only limited success.
I can tolerate the car now, but it is not as good as it was or should be. Very few people seem to be able to set up these gearboxes correctly, so my advice would be to leave it alone and keep the dealer away from it.

JodelJan 6, Well if the box is bad don't buy it. If they have updated it and adapted it and still the same means never get rid of it.
Theres 7g plus It is supposed to be better. Alex had a very nice 7g box in his R class. Colins first R class had a very nice 7g box. You must log in or sign up to reply here. Show Ignored Content.
7G-tronic problem - Help
Several software upgrades over 3 year period. Eventually resolved approx 15 months ago. Electro Hydraulic Control Unit failed at around 50K miles. Fortunately vehicle was in last month of warranty. The long term reliability of this box does concern me. The vehicle always rolls back on hill regardless of whether it's in 'S' or 'C' mode. The dealer informed me that this was a feature of the 7G box. It can be a real pain as you need to use the handbrake or left foot on the brake. The wifes SLK with the 5 speed box doesn't do this.
The other strange thing it does in 'S' mode is if you pull up at some lights or a junction, just before you come to standstill you get a slight 'surge'. I'm not sure if this is the box dropping into 1st gear. It doesn't happen in 'C' mode.
Last edited: Dec 17, It wouldn't be so bad if the vehicle had a conventional handbrake but it really is a pain trying to negotiate a hill start with the foot brake and hand release. It was installed on all rear-wheel drive cars.
It is designed on the basis of automatic transmission of the 6th series and many parts are interchangeable. Theoretically ideal is the 6-speed for the stepped automatic transmission. Where the gear ratios are brought together and divorced enough to comfortably jostle in urban traffic jams, and to save fuel during long delays on an unlimited route. And thus that the switching of speeds were carried out imperceptibly, but without excessive fuss, when the driver brakes before dispersal.
But in Traditionally, in the 9th series, Mercedes engineers laid the controlled slippage of the clutches of the torque converter, which is already connected from the first speed from the lowest speed. To do this, just press the accelerator pedal. And this feature of the 9th series results in the rapid contamination of the oil by the clutch of the bagel and the rather early need for repair of the GDT. Strongly not waiting for the cherished tkm.
The whole family For AKP before there were four types of oil filter and crankcase. Now install two different oil filters and crankcase. The oil level here is very important, therefore the design allows it to be easily maintained and checked. At the moment, there are two different types of oil for the gearbox: ATF red, tolerance Frequent oil changes markedly prolong the service life of the box.
For bulkheads, the services are still preferred by reliable and expensive original overlays. Frictions on Mercedes fashion — one-sided, are replaced most often by frictions of package K2. They are followed by K1 clutches, but with burned oil it is advisable to change the complete set of friction discs. To all the above sets for a typical overhaul of an overheated box, almost always order another set of pistons.
In the bulkhead, the clutch packages K1 and K2 are checked first. It is there that one-sided clutches are burned. Masters claim that it is because of the abnormal operation that the hydroplates do not receive the required oil pressure properly, the clusters are burning, and all other problems are happening along the chain.
Since the designers provided repair of the hydraulic unit without dismantling the automatic transmission, this problem, noticed on time, is solved with relatively little blood. Oil is used here for two generations, differing: red to and blue after. The problem of capricious electronics has very much spoiled the image of Mercedes as a reliable manufacturer.
Replacement of the motherboard and hydroblock of the first issues of Mercedes accuses Siemens of everything. Keep in mind, in this mode the car accelerates not so actively, but still rides.
You can still live, but no longer work. And although the iron of this automatic is very reliable, but because of malfunctioning electronics, the problems of the oil pump lead to a chain of problems with the rear planetary series, with bushings. Many owners manage to prevent them, putting the car on time in the repair of automatic transmission. Owners of this modern and very comfortable automatic transmission should take it as a rule not to overheat the automatic transmission and in every visit to the car maintenance check the automatic transmission oil for color, the presence of dirt and shavings in the pallet.
Yes, and change the oil with a filter every 60 tkm. Once every two years, such costs for maintenance of automatic transmission — a small fee for the confidence in his horse. For reset, adaptation and personalization of 7G-tronic gearboxes possible using: 1.
Peter LankyOct 13, I think it's engine dependent which gearbox you get. JBellOct 13, My friend has the 9g in his ECDI. Seems like a lovely smooth box with a very long top gear.
YugguyOct 13, The 9G box is very long legged, mines sits at 1, RPM for 70mph. It doesn't often stay in 9th but you only know what gear you're in by looking at the display.
Another huge benefit of the 9G box is that it coasts better than a manual knocked out of gear. You'll find yourself just braking coasting behind other vehicles as it just doesn't lose speed, great for fuel economy if you plan ahead and don't brake. BlobcatOct 13, Submariner1Oct 13, SL65 AMG. An additional benefit of using the updated filter is if you replace a damaged component in the transmission and you find significant debris in the pan, you will no longer need to replace the entire transmission. You can simply replace the component, clean the valves, and perform a fluid and filter change.
